David James Markley, 73 of North East, MD, passed on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at Abbey Manor Assisted Living, Elkton, MD after a valiant struggle with melanoma.

Jim, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Wilkinsburg, PA, on December 22, 1942.  He was the son of John P. and Elizabeth Markley, and beloved husband and friend of Patricia M. Markley.  He is survived by siblings: Isabelle Markley, Gerald P. Markley and Nancy Jean Pickering.

He holds a BA and Master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University, where he concentrated on technical theatre; specializing in set and lighting design.

He taught technical theater and design at Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY for 36 years.  He also designed many shows for dinner theatre, off-Broadway and regional theater.  He retired in 2006 and moved to North East where he was an active member of the North East Methodist Church.  For over 30 years, he enjoyed summer months at his River Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY, where he worshipped at Luzerne Methodist Church and volunteered at the Luzerne Music Camp.

His passions were theater, trains, circus, reading and sharing his knowledge.  He was a generous and gifted teacher and designer.

Funeral arrangements are at the Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, 21901.  There will be a viewing on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm and again from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 10:00 am.

Interment will follow in North East Methodist Cemetery.
