Sherman Thomas "Tom" Aliff

Sherman Thomas “Tom” Aliff, 86, of North East, MD, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023 in Autumn Lake at Calvert Manor, Rising Sun, MD.

Born in Bluefield, WV, on January 18, 1937, he was the son of the late Sherman Thomas Aliff and Opal Agnes (Litton) Aliff. He was also preceded in death by his youngest brother Harry Lee Ratliff and his son-in-law Michael T. Smith.

Tom retired from Leeds & Northrup in 1996 where he worked as a Field Engineer for over 25 years.  He began his career building radio stations, starting with WXVA in Charles Town, WV, followed by WSER in Elkton, MD.  He also assisted with the startup of WOEL-FM in Elkton.  Tom also spent several years working for Thiokol where he was part of the Delta Rocket motor design team.

He was a longtime member of Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church, Nottingham, PA.

An amateur radio enthusiast and FCC license holder, he was also very knowledgeable about gemstones and minerals, making beautiful jewelry from them.  He also enjoyed fishing and crabbing, researching family ancestry and traveling to all 50 states with his wife.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years: Eunice (Hedrick) Aliff; children: Sheri L. Smith of Pasadena, MD, Sarah A. Totushek of Frederick, MD, Thomas E. Aliff (Jennifer) of Pasadena, MD, Philip J. Aliff (Holly) of Elkton, MD; his brother: John V. Aliff of Auburn, GA; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral service, conducted by Rev. Gary Moore, will be held Friday, November 17, 2023, at 11:00 am at Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church, 303 W. Christine Road, Nottingham, PA, with visitation beginning at 9:30 am.

Interment will follow services in the church cemetery.
