Mary Wiggins Obituary

Mary Crothers Wiggins, age 94, of North East, MD, passed away April 16, 2023 at her family farmhouse surrounded by her loving family.  Born in Elkton, MD, Mary was one of two children born of the late J. Lawson and the late Mary Martin Crothers, Sr.

Mrs. Wiggins attended Grove School in Zion, MD, for 4 years.  She then attended Calvert School, graduating in 1945.  Upon graduation, she attended Beacom Business College.  In 1946, she was crowned the first ever Miss Cecil County Farm Queen.

Mary married her beloved husband, the late Lawrence D. Wiggins, Sr., on April 19, 1947, and they remained together for 67 years until his death on January 21, 2014.  While raising her large family, she remained an active, lifetime member of Zion United Methodist Church, where at various times she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and belonged to United Methodist Women.  She was a member of the Homemakers Club and served as a 4-H leader for the Zippy Zioneers for many years.  Mrs. Wiggins belonged to the North East Lions Club along with her husband [as a Lioness].  She served as a Teacher's Aide at Bay View Elementary School for 10 years, a role that she enjoyed and took great pride in, as well as serving as a volunteer for the Board of Elections and Cecil County farm fairs.

Mrs. Wiggins leaves behind to mourn and celebrate her life her children:  Charlotte Deborah Trout and her husband, Gene, of Edgewood, MD, Lawrence Dean Wiggins, Jr., of Rising Sun, MD, Stephen David Wiggins of North East, MD, Mary Diane Wiggins, of the World, Christine Dawn Auslander and her husband, Bill, of Herndon, VA, and daughter-in-law, Sandy Wiggins of Mena, AR.; countless grandchildren; a growing number of great-grandchildren; and others she took in and loved as her own.  In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wiggins was pre-deceased by her brother, John L. Crothers, Jr., son, Mark Daniel Wiggins, and grandson, Jamey Crothers Wiggins.

Mary will be lovingly remembered for her love for and loyalty of her huge extended family and friends, strong will and faith, kindness, love of travel, and her red hair and red kisses.  Helping people in need brought joy to her and Larry, and no one was turned away.
