Joseph Fred Sexton, Jr., age 67 while at home in the presence of angels and his loving family departed this life to join his Savior on March 30, 2017. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Joe had touched in some small way throughout his memorable life. The oldest of five children, he was born in Havre de Grace on August 22, 1949 to Joseph Fred and Dorothy (Carter) Sexton. During his lifetime Joe was known for his superior physical strength and kind, gentle spirit. It was that strength, spirit and his dimples that attracted Deborah to this “gentle giant”. Married for forty years Joe and Debbie were united in holy matrimony on September 18, 1976. They have been the proud parents of a son and daughter.
In his earlier years Joe worked as a millwright and used his unmatched skills as a carpenter to build a home for his family-one that was always filled with laughter-mostly due to Joe’s orneriness. His special interests and hobbies included shooting trap, fishing, hunting (how much was that fine again?) and collector of knives. Over the past twenty-two years Joe has enjoyed membership at the Oxford Gun Club. His favorite things were spending time with his children and grand-children, all of whom he adored; and coffee. The height and breadth of Joe’s love for his family and the many ways he tenderly displayed his love was far greater than words can express. Equally, the love of Joe’s immediate and extended family for him always has been and continues to be immeasurable. And yes, Wawa has lost a very loyal customer.
Left to honor and remember his love are his beloved wife Debbie; children, Joseph III (Kristy) and Katie Marie; grand-children, Madison and Joseph IV; siblings, Bonnie Arnold (Charles), Debbie Gilbert (Dennis) and the Reverend David Sexton (Sharon). Joe was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Lois.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 4 from 6-8 PM at Charlestown Missionary Baptist Church, 1168 West Old Philadelphia Rd. On Wednesday, April 5 the funeral service will be held at 11 AM at Charlestown Missionary Baptist Church with procession to the cemetery to immediately follow. Joseph will be interred at Darlington Cemetery.
