Ulysses Grant Demond, III, "Nick", 87 of North East, MD, died Monday, December 6, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of North East, he was born on July 25, 1923, the son of the late Ulysses G. Demond, Jr. and the late Mable Hines Demond. Mr. Demond was the beloved husband of Lucia G. Demond. He served his country in the U.S. Army from February 1943 until January 1946. He served in the ETO for 18 months as Sergeant. He was a member of the 29th Infantry Division. While in France for the 50th anniversary of D-Day, he was awarded the St. Lo Medallion and the "Normandy" Medal for the liberation of St. Lo and Normandy. He received Associate Degrees from Beacom and later from Goldey Beacom. He worked as an Industrial Salesman for J.E. Rhoads and Sons of Wilmington, DE and Central Belting of Richmond, VA. He was also co owner of The Mill House Bed and Breakfast in North East from 1988 until 1999. Mr. Demond was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 49 years, during which time he served as Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Member and District Chairman. He earned Wood Badge Beads in 1970, was awarded the Silver Beaver in 1971 and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was an active member of North East United Methodist Church, a former 4 term mayor of the Town of North East, and served as Chairman of the North East Planning and Zoning Commission. A life member of the Historical Society of Cecil County, he served as president for 2 terms; member of Cecil Historical Trust, Inc.; life member of Upper Bay Museum of North East where he served as a director; member and past Commander of the 29th Division Association - Post 85; life member of VFW Post 6027; member of American Legion Post 15, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Maryland Citizen's Planners Association, North East Chamber of Commerce and the Governor's Military Monuments Commission. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter: Gabrielle D. Oldham and husband John, and son: Ulysses Grant Demond IV and wife Tonya all of North East, MD; his niece that was a third daughter to him, Lauren Eib of Tucson, AZ; a brother: Charles Stewart Demond of Elkton, MD, sister: Janice Demond Sprout of North East, MD; his grandchildren: Nicole Wilson, Ulysses Grant Demond V, Tiffany Demond and Whitney Demond; and his great grandchildren: Silvie Wilson and Aubrey Demond. He was preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Lucinda A. Demond in 1999. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday evening, December 10, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Tom Short and Rev. Bert Jicha will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 1:00 PM at North East United Methodist Church, 308 South Main Street, North East, MD Interment with full military honors will follow in North East Methodist Church Cemetery, North East, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Upper Bay Museum or Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.
