Tommy Joey Hylton

On Friday evening, October 14, 2022, Tommy J. Hylton “Tom”, age 84 of Elkton, MD, went home to be with the Lord.

Tom was born in Rogersville, TN, to Grover and Ella Hylton.  He served in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain aboard the U.S.S. Macon CA132.  In 1961, he married Patricia, and together they raised two children, Cheryl and Geoff.  He also worked for thirty-two years at General Motors until his retirement.

Tom was an avid reader of history and the Bible.  He was a great outdoorsman and liked hunting, fishing, archery, and gardening.  He enjoyed working in his workshop, building birdhouses, writing poetry, and watching sunrises.  A man of faith, he was known for his wisdom and sense of humor.  Tom relished telling jokes and stories and making people laugh.  Family meant everything to him.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Cleo Hocket, and brothers, Carson and Ronnie Hylton.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Hylton, daughter, Cheryl Smith and her husband, Tim, his son, Geoff Hylton and his wife, Cindy, as well as his grandchildren, Jared, Erin, Ben, and Zach Smith, and his great granddaughter, Leah Smith.  He is also survived by his siblings, Don Hylton and his wife, Gerrie, Wanda Pritchard, Freda Betts and Linda Newberry.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the EMS from Singerly Fire Company, the Cecil County Paramedics, the Cecil County Deputies, Corporal Alexa Donald and DRC Matthew Imming.

Funeral service will be held Friday, October 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Maranatha Baptist Church, 3141 Old Elk Neck Road, Elkton, MD, with visitation beginning at 12:00 noon.

Interment will follow in North East Methodist Cemetery, North East, MD.
