Ruth Anna Meekins Cliff, 101 of North East, MD, passed away peacefully Monday, January 28, 2008 at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun, MD. Ruth was born on May 26, 1906, to Sadie and Warren Meekins in North East, MD. She was one of 10 children and was the last survivor. Ruth married William Billy Cliff on December 31, 1927 and lived in Philadelphia, PA for a short period of time. They then returned to North East, where they made their home and raised 5 children together. She lived in North East her entire life until she moved to Calvert Manor in 2002. Many people knew Ruth when she worked at Madelin's and John D's. She was well liked and had many friends. She was also well known by the many who were the recipients of her wonderful baked goods. In celebration of her 100th birthday, the entire family participated in a pizza party, one of her favorite foods. It was the first time the entire family had ever been together and included 5 generations. Survivors include: her children: Selma Pyle and her husband Harry of Lady Lake, FL; William John Cliff, Jr. and his wife Loretta of Lakeside, CA; and May Davig and her husband Dale of Middleton, WI. She was also survived by 8 granddaughters; 1 grandson; 9 great grandsons; 1 great granddaughter; 2 great-great grandsons; and 1 great-great granddaughter. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; 9 siblings; her husband Billy; and two sons: Robert and Rudy. The family wishes to thank the staff at Calvert Manor for the loving, tender care they gave to Ruth in her 5 years as a resident. She always referred to Calvert as "home". Ruth was very blessed to also have the loving care of her granddaughters: Ruth, Leslie, Dawn and Diane, especially during her stay at Calvert Manor. Ruth will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, where family and friends may call Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Rev. Daniel T. Gedman will officiate. Interment will be in North East Methodist Cemetery, North East. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Ruth to: Calvert Manor Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o the funeral home.
