Nellie Mae Edwards, 92 of North East, MD, formerly of Lake Worth, FL, died Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Union Hospital, Elkton, MD after a brief illness. She was a resident of Elkton Care and Rehab, Elkton, MD. Born in Parkersburg, WV, on July 4, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and the late Freda Pernell Dickson. She and her late husband, Glen G. Edwards, Jr. lived in North East, MD until 1968 when they moved to Lake Worth, FL. They lived in Florida until 1996, when they returned to North East after her husband was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. When in Florida, they were members of the Lakeside UMC, where they served in many capacities. Nellie and her husband received the prestigious Cross and Flame Award from Lakeside UMC. They returned back to their home church, North East UMC, where they had taught Sunday School and were members of many church groups. She was known affectionately at both churches as "The Hugger", with a warm greeting for all. Nellie let everyone know that she was born on the 4th of July and that she was a "firecracker', and lived up to that name. Just about everyone she came in contact with got an "I Love You." She is survived by her three daughters, her "Angels": Hope Reed and her husband Tom of Torrence, CA, Eleanor Worth and her husband Bill of Lewisville, PA and Jane McCleary and her husband Bob of Lincoln University, PA; two sisters: Grace Jennings of Vienna, WV and Joan Thayer of Gainesville, FL; 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Glenn G. Edwards, Jr.; her sisters: June Dotson and Fern Headley; and two stepchildren: Barbara Tarlton and Ralph Edwards. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dave Bergstrem and Rev. Daniel T. Gedman will be held Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, with visitation for family and friends beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will be Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 12:00 Noon in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Nellie to the charity of your choice.
