On April 11th, 2026, at 8:12 pm, Neil went to be with Our Lord. He was surrounded by his wife and children as he took his last breath in this world and he met his Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary Esther Fichthorn.
His children are Phillip Fichthorn of Rising Sun, MD, Barbara MacBeth of Fort Myers, FL, and Pamela Keller of Parrish, FL.
He has 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Early in Neil’s life, he discovered that he was very musical. In high school, he began singing, and he learned to play the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. He started directing music at the Gospel Center in Reading, PA. During the summers in high school, he worked at Pinebrook Bible Conference under the direction of evangelist Percy Crawford; he also substituted in Percy’s quartet. While at Pinebrook, he learned about The King’s College and decided he wanted to go there instead of West Chester University, where his mother wanted him to go.
As a freshman at The King’s College, an opportunity arrived for a director for the May Festival, and he was able to put the program together that was a success. For the next three years, he was the go-to person for any musical productions at King’s and became the Choir President and Student Conductor. During his senior year, he held auditions for the choir and noticed a cute college freshman named Mary Esther Templeman. Shortly after that, he found out that she was a very good piano accompanist, and so started their romance and lifelong partnership of director and pianist.
Neil graduated from King’s and then from Columbia’s Teachers College with his Master's in Education. His career started teaching music at The King’s College, and during that time, his son, Phil, and daughter, Barb, were born. He then took several teaching jobs in music, which eventually led the family to Levittown, PA. During his time in PA, along with teaching music in Bristol Township, he became the Music and Worship Director at Calvary Baptist Church in Bristol. While at Calvary Baptist, he started a concert series with John Peterson, gospel song composer, and worked with all the churches in the area to have a combined choir and orchestra that Neil trained; John Peterson then flew in to lead the performance. He did multiple performances with John, the final production being No Greater Love with actors, choir and orchestra in front of an audience of 10,000.
Also during this time, Pam was born, and he was ordained as a minister. Since he was a school teacher, he had the summers off. He learned of a place called Sandy Cove under Dr. George Palmer that had a summer program that included worship and a choir. An opportunity became available for the summer choir director, for which he was hired. After working two summers at Sandy Cove Bible Conference, he felt the calling to go full-time as the Vice-President of Music and Public Relations. The family moved to Sandy Cove around 1970.
For 15 years, he grew the summer music ministry to have large crowds of up to 1000 people for the Saturday night concert. He started the Morning Cheer Quartet that sang during the summer and went to churches throughout the rest of the year promoting Sandy Cove. One of the largest events was having Bill and Gloria Gaither, along with the Gaither Vocal Quartet, at Valley Forge Music Center to promote Sandy Cove. Dr. Palmer was amazed at the turnout. Sandy Cove had a 30-minute radio program called the Morning Cheer Broadcast on several stations during this time, for which he was the producer.
After 15 years of ministry at Sandy Cove, Neil felt called to become the Director of Gull Lake Bible and Missionary Conference in a lovely area of western Michigan. He was President there for five years, where he used his administrative and musical talents to grow the conference. He returned to Sandy Cove Bible Conference in 1990 as President, served as the Christian Camping International (CCI) President during that tenure, and then retired after 10 more years of service.
During retirement, Neil became a Bible Conference consultant and started writing/sending weekly devotionals to a readership of about 250, and in 2025, he published a devotional book.
Neil enjoyed family, travel, and fishing. His lifelong goals of worldwide travel, successful Christian ministry, and a close-knit family were fully realized, and he always continued to find avenues of growth even into his 90s. He was an amazing husband, father & grandfather.
The funeral will be held at Sandy Cove Bible Conference (60 Sandy Cove Road, North East, MD) on Thursday, April 23. Visitation will be from 3-5 pm, a service from 5-6, and a time of food & fellowship will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sandy Cove Bible Conference, North East, MD.
