Mary L. Gillis, 60, of North East Maryland passed away after a five year battle with cancer on October 11, 2017.

Mary was born January 4, 1957 in Sacramento, CA. The daughter of an Air Force officer, she moved around a lot until settling in North East, Maryland. Mary always found her way helping someone in her jobs, whether of the four legged kind, or the two legged kind. Caring for others came naturally to her. A vet tech for thirteen years and never ceased to amaze those who knew her how many animals she could bring home from her work. One of her biggest joys was horses even as a child. She then worked down the road from her house at a thoroughbred breeding farm delivering over 50 foals.  She then went on to become a Registered Nurse, graduating at the age of 52 from Cecil College. After graduation she began working at Harford Memorial Hospital. Being the caring person she was, she would often go above and beyond for her patients. Mary was a kind, intelligent, fun-loving woman and everyone she met even for a brief moment of time fell in love.

Mary is survived by her husband of thirty-five years, Joseph C. Gillis Jr. and her two daughters, Emily L. Gillis Esq. and Kimberly A Gillis, all of North East, MD; brothers: David L. Cassalia, of CT; Daniel W Cassalia, of FL; Dennis J. Cassalia, of CA; Donald F. Cassalia, of Elkton MD; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Major David J. Cassalia, and Ruth V. Cassalia.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Mary’s brothers for helping in any way that they could, especially Donald and his wife Mare, as well as Rick and Kim Wyre for being on call when the time was needed.
