Lula McMillan Brooks, age 83 of North East, Maryland, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Calvert Manor Nursing Home, Rising Sun, MD, where she had been a patient since June 2007. Her husband of 63 years, Lester Curtis Brooks, preceded her in death in June 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Patchin and husband Al, and Betty Lou Peirson and husband Sam, of North East, MD; five grandchildren, Jill Chapin and husband Randy; Rebecca Stecher and husband Michael; Cynthia Weatherington; Amy Hash and husband John; and Ryan Ashbridge; twelve great-grandchildren--Sarah Deaner, Grace Weatherington, Nicholas Graham, Luke Weatherington, Emily Hash, Joshua Patchin, Michael Stecher, Jr., Brooke Weatherington, Leah Hash, Isaac Chapin, Claire Hash and Madeline Chapin. Lula was born in Piney Creek, North Carolina, on October 28, 1924. She was the first born daughter of the late Binom and Dora McMillan. She had two sisters. Verna "Bunny" Wiker preceded her in death and her one surviving sister is Marjorie "Midge" Burkentine of Surfside Beach, SC. Lula was a member of New Bridge Regular Baptist Church, Colora, MD. Her greatest joy was in serving the Lord and her conversation in daily living was often centered around her faith. Lula was a true homemaker and spent her life giving to her husband and family. She loved to sew and crochet and enjoyed all types of arts and crafts. After her husband Lester's retirement in 1973, they enjoyed traveling together to all parts of the United States, Canada and Mexico. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 25th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 26th at 11:00 AM at New Bridge Regular Baptist Church, Colora, MD, with visitation before the service starting at 10:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in the church's adjoining cemetery beside her beloved husband Lester.
