Lon Duncan Campbell, 61, of Elkton, MD, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, in the Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun, MD. Born in West Grove, PA, on March 18, 1947, he was the son of Eva Irene Brooks Campbell of Elkton, MD, and the late Ronda Jones Campbell. Survivors include: three sisters: Alta Campbell of Earleville, MD; Mavis Gibson of Elkton, MD; and Clara Campbell of Earleville, MD; two brothers: Hugh Campbell of Elkton, MD; and Zane Campbell of Elkton, MD. Lon was a Supervisory Readjustment Counseling Team Leader for the Vet Center, Elkton, MD. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 40 years, first as a Readjustment Counseling Therapist, then for the past 25 years as a Team Leader for the Readjustment Counseling Service. Lon was also a licensed mortician. He graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science, Inc., in New York City in 1967 with a degree in mortuary science. He fulfilled his apprenticeship in 1969 and has practiced since then. Lon served in the U.S. Army from 1969-71, where he attained the rank of SGT. E-5. He attended and graduated from the NCO Academy at Fort Lewis, WA. As a member of the Sixth US Army Escort Detachment, he served as a casualty escort for one and a half years at the Oakland Army Terminal in Oakland, CA. During the Vietnam War, he escorted 40 bodies home to multiple states and represented the Army at the funerals. Lon was much loved by his family, professional colleagues, and friends. With his sensitivity and his desire to help, he touched the lives of a wide variety of people. He will be remembered for many things, particularly his wit, his ability to tell a great story, and his diverse interests, which included hunting, fishing, cooking, reading, antique collecting, and the Northeast River. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 10:00 AM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, 21901 with visitation for family and friends on Tuesday, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Rev. James B. Jones will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Veterans Service Organizations, in care of the funeral home. Interment will be in North East Methodist Cemetery, North East, MD.
