Kalman Gyula Szkalak, 87 of Rising Sun, MD, died at the home of his daughter on August 30, 2007. Mr. Szkalak was born on June 4, 1920, in Arad, Hungary. After the Treaty of Trianon, which transferred Arad to Romania, he moved to Budapest. He graduated from Ludavic Academy in 1941, and immediately entered active duty military service with the Hungarian Army. He participated in numerous campaigns on the eastern front from 1941 to 1945. Mr. Szkalak and his family came to the United States in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. Prior to moving to Rising Sun in 1973, he and his family were longtime residents of Delaware, where he worked as a draftsman for the engineering firm of Vander, Mark & Lynch. Mr. Szkalak was preceded in death by his wife, Katalin nee Lapu Szkalak who died in 1978; his oldest daughter, Nancy Sweiger; and her son Eric. Survivors include three sons: Lt. Col. Elek J. Szkalak, USMC Ret of Burke, VA; Kalman Z. Szkalak of Dana Point, CA; and Joseph S. Szkalak of Rising Sun, MD; one daughter: Kathleen Dean of North East, MD; and also 10 grandchildren: Matthew Szkalak, Chelsea Dean, Carly Dean, Jessie Sweiger, Sonja Sweiger, Alexis Szkalak, Stefani Szkalak, Kalman Szkalak, Steven Szkalak and Meaghan Szkalak.
