Joseph Thomas Zakreski, affectionately known as “Jose,” passed away peacefully on
Saturday, May 2 nd , 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, devotion to family, and a
life rooted in community.
Joe was born on December 11, 1952, in Wilmington to Lois and Joseph Zakreski. While
attending Claymont High School, he met the love of his life, Holly. The two married and
built a life together, looking forward to celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary.
Around 1975, Joe and Holly made their home in Cecil County, where they raised their
daughter. During their early years on Bouchelle Road, Joe was given the nickname
“Jose” by “Grandpa” Ralph Leveredge—a name that stayed with him for life. In North
East, many may not have known Joe, but everyone knew “Jose.”
Joe was a skilled and dedicated tradesman who worked in construction, plumbing, and
HVAC before retiring from University of Delaware Facilities in 2007.
Joe had a lifelong love for the water. In his younger years, he could often be found
fishing or crabbing. In his final days, he found peace sitting on his patio overlooking the
North East River, watching eagles and ospreys with a beer in hand.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Holly; his daughter, Rachael Boyd and
her husband, Tommy; his grandchildren, Natalie Jo Cole, Joseph Juergens III, and
Brandon Boyd (Elisha); and his great-grandchildren, Levi Cole, Holden and Hallie Boyd,
and Dream Poppert. He is also survived by his siblings, MaryAnne Zakreski, SSJ, of
West Chester, PA, John Zakreski of Wilmington, DE, and Paul Zakreski of Villa, NJ; and
his nephew, Steven Zakreski, Jr., of Rising Sun, MD.
Joe will also be fondly remembered by his fishing buddies, David Weaver, Robert
Rakes, and Alan Walker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Joseph Zakreski, and his brother,
Steven Zakreski, Sr.
The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Joe’s life on Friday,
May 22, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at VFW Auxiliary Post 6027, 815 Turkey Point Rd, North
