John V Nickle

John V Nickle, 80, of North East, MD, died Thursday, December 23, 2004 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Elkton, MD, on March 9, 1924, he was the son of the late Wilbur F and the late Alice Hall Nickle. He was a lifelong resident of Cecil County.An electrician by trade, he was a foreman for C. Paul Nickle, Inc, Newark, DE, and a Technical Supervisor for Cecil County Board of Education until retiring in 1989. Upon retiring, he became a well-known carver of decorative decoys.He served in the US Army-178th Ordinance during WWII and was active in hosting annual reunions. He performed assigned duties in the European Theater of Operations, drove a 10-ton semi-trailer hauling ordnance supplies, ammunition, gasoline, rations, and personnel. Driving was accomplished under blackout and inclement weather conditions and over all types of terrain. He was a member of the North East United Methodist Church and a former trustee, member of the NE Volunteer Fire Dept, a member of the Upper Bay Museum, and a former Cub Scout Master. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and gardening.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances P Nickle, North East, MD;son and daughter-in-law; Kenneth William & Joan Inez Nickle; daughter, Carol Ann Nickle; grandson, Larry Kenneth Nickle, all of North East, MD; brother C Paul Nickle, Secretary, MD; sister Alice Osborne, North East, MD, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Laura Ann Nickle, and brothers; Wilbur A Nickle and F Carroll Nickle.Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the North East United Methodist Church, 308 South Main Street, North East, MD. Friends may call Monday, December 27, 2004 from 6:00PM until 8:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD. The Rev. Daniel Gedman will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow services in North East Methodist Cemetery, North East, MD.In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Ann Nickle Memorial Scholarship c/o the Cecil Community College Foundation, 1 Seahawk Dr, North East, MD, 21901.
