J. Joseph Hofmann

J. Joseph Hofmann, a retiree from Jersey Central Power and Light Company, died on July 19, 2005, at the age of 79. He was born in Providence, RI in 1925. Later in life, he lived in Long Island and New York City. After his marriage to Mary Holst, he made his home in New Jersey until his retirement in 2001. Upon retiring, he moved to the Village of Cecil Woods in Elkton, MD. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Hofmann directed the Employee Assistance Program at JCP&L for 13 years. He was a member of and two-time president of the New Jersey State Chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. For 30 years, Mr. Hofmann was a Jesuit of the New York Province and he taught at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City for 3 years. He then served as Senior Catholic Chaplain at the Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY. During his 15 years of hospital work, he taught medical-moral ethics to the student nurses. He was one of the founding members of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, he attended many counseling workshops throughout the United States, and he was a Captain Chaplain in the New York Guard 14th Regiment until he resigned from the priesthood. Mr. Hofmann received a bachelor's degree in the arts and another in theology from Woodstock College in Maryland. He later earned a master's degree and professional diploma in counseling from the Iona College in New Rochelle, NY and St. John's University in Queens, NY. While living in New Jersey, he was an active member and lector reader at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Parsippany, NJ. While in Elkton, he was a communicant for the Immaculate Conception Parish. Due to his age and failing health, he was no longer able to participate in golf and handball, the sports he loved. He made his most recent hobby to try various restaurants in the area. In addition to his wife of 30 years, Mary Holst Hofmann of Elkton, MD, survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Linton and her husband Francis; and 2 granddaughters, Katherine and Malana Linton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father Joseph Piekarski at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 23, 2005, at St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church, 928 Turkey Point Road, North East, MD. Visitations will be held at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, on Thursday, July 21, 2005, from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Friday, July 22, 2005 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM, and again on Friday from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
