Herbert Moyer Wood, 82 of North East, MD, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 in the Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun, MD. A lifelong resident, he was born in North East on January 3, 1927, the son of the late Herbert S. and the late Erma Moyer Wood. Mr. Wood was the beloved husband for 60 years of Eleanor Anne Dennis Wood. Mr. Wood served during World War II in the Navy and was active in the Reserves for many years. The bricklaying skills he learned from his father, he later utilized to start his own business. He retired from the State of Maryland where he worked as a Field Engineer. He was a member of Hart's United Methodist Church, Elk Neck, MD and a member of the Civil Air Patrol for 50 years, where he served as Commander of the Delaware Wing. For many years he was active in the North East Little League. In addition to his loving wife, survivors include his children: Joan Milton and husband Dave of Beverly Hills, FL; Susan Russell of Port Deposit, MD; Karen Sherman and husband Tim of North East, MD and Edmund Wood of North East, MD; grandchildren: Amy Pierce and husband James; Fred Russell and wife Jen; Michael Russell and wife Maria; Jesse Yeatman and wife Sharol; Rachel Yeatman; Chad Milton and wife Sarah; Rebecca England and husband Barton and Emily Wood; 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Florence Kidd of North East, MD; and a brother, Russell Wood of Elkton, MD; He was also preceded in death by two daughters: Aileen Wood Yeatman and Beverly Wood. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, January 4, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mary Browne will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Hart's United Methodist Church, 3203 Turkey Point Road, North East, MD. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to: Hart's United Methodist Church Building Fund, or Calvert Manor Nursing Scholarship, both in care of the funeral home.
