Helen Stein, 87, of Newark, DE, died in the Kutz Nursing Home in Wilmington, DE, on February 21, 2005. Born in New York City, NY, on November 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Mordecai and the late Channah VonGrover Litsky. She was preceded in death by two husbands, the late Alan Stein who died in 2004, and the late David Gordon, who died in 1963. She worked as an employment agency counselor and as a bookkeeper. She was also a published poet, a pianist, and a poetry award winner. She was a member of the Temple Beth Tikvah in Madison, CT, and volunteered in multiple libraries. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Ada and Molly, and four brothers, Lou, David, Joe, and Charlie. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Sheppard and her hsuband Jim of San Diego, CA; three sons, Michael Gordon and his wife Suzanne of Elkton, MD, William Gordon and his wife Linda of Newark, DE, and Jon Gordon and his wife Athena of Boston, MA; two step daughters, Marian Valenti of Peekskill, NY, and Cindy Sweet of West Chester, NY; and one step son, Alan Stein, Jr. of White Plains, NY. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2:15 PM, Friday, February 25, 2005, at Nut Plains Cemetery, Nut Plains Road, Guildord, CT, where Rabbi Howard Summers of Temple Beth Tikvah will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be sent to the hospice Odyssey Health Care, 1407 Foulk Road, Suite 200, Wilmington, DE 19803.
