George S. Cantler, Sr, or North East, MD, died Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Perry Point Veterans Administration Medical Center. Born in Conowingo, MD, on August 9, 1920, he was the son of the late Hugh Evans and Mary Etta Sampson Cantler. He retired in 1980 from Aberdeen Proving Ground with 32 years of service as a carpenter. He served in the United States Army in WWII where he served as a Technician Fifth Grade, 101st General Hospital and was a member of the American Legion Post 47 in Havre de Grace, MD. Husband of the late Ellen Purner Cantler, who died on February 12, 2005. Survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George S. Cantler, Jr. and Bobbie Cantler of Perryville, MD; sisters, Mary Rose Steppo, Las Vegas, Nevada, Hazel Castle, Chicago, IL., Faye Cox, North East, MD, and Barbara Parrott, Havre de Grace, MD; brother, Nelson Cantler, St. Petersburg, FL; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Cantler was preceded in death by two brothers, Carrol Cantler, and Roy E. Cantler; sister, Dorothy Morris; and a great-grandson, Zacharay Boone. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, where relatives and friends may call on Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The Rev. Daniel Gedman will officiate. Interment with full military honors will be in the North East Methodist Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the North East Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 770, North East, MD 21901.
