Listen to Obituary

Fern F. Pierce, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, kindness, and cherished memories.

Fern was born on May 31, 1934, in Preston, New York, to Flora Mae Lewis Smith and Thomas Berton Smith. She grew up surrounded by family and carried throughout her life the values of compassion, resilience, and devotion that became the foundation of her own family.

The greatest joy of Fern's life was caring for others. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Roger Hugh Pierce, with whom she shared 49 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and enduring traditions. Although Roger preceded her in death, the love they shared remains an inspiration to all who knew them.

Fern was a loving mother to her three daughters, Sherrie Lynne Pierce, Diane Michelle Pierce, and Kimberley Anne Pierce Hefner (Ronald), and her daughter-in-law, Denise Blakely Pierce. She was endlessly proud of her family and found immense happiness in watching each new generation grow.

She is survived by her sisters, Irma Smith Petley (David) and Caroline Smith Georgia; her grandchildren, Brandon Scott Pierce (Yvonne), Ryan Andrew Pierce (Rachel), Chase Martin Hefner (Jennifer), Meghann Elizabeth Hefner D'Anna (Angelo), Garrett Pierce Hefner, and Cameron Hugh Pierce; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Sophia and Sienna Pierce, and Joseph D'Anna, who brought her immeasurable joy.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Hugh Pierce; her brother, Charles O. Smith; and her sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Smith Sylstra and Esther Smith Wilson.

One of Fern's greatest joys outside her family was serving homebound senior citizens in Cecil County by shopping for their groceries. While she made certain they had everything they needed, she gave them something even more precious—her time, her friendship, and her compassionate heart. She also began oil painting late in life, creating treasured canvases that remind her family of the things that were important to her.

Those who knew Fern will remember her gentle spirit, quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering love for her family. She possessed the rare gift of making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Whether caring for her family, visiting a homebound neighbor, or sharing a simple conversation, she left every life a little brighter than she found it.

She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in our hearts.

Viewing will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 from 6-8pm; and funeral on Wednesday, July 8 beginning at 11:00 am at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 S Main St North East, MD 21901.
