Ellen Purner Cantler

Ellen P. Cantler, 82 of North East, MD, died Saturday, February 12, 2005 in her home with family and friends. Born in North East, MD, on December 5, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Marshall White Purner Martha Meekins Purner. Mrs. Cantler retired in 1997, with 17 years of service from North East High School as a General Assistant. She also had worked at Schult Mobil Homes in Elkton, MD, and Triumph Explosives during WWII. After WWII, she was a Civil Defense plane spotter, and she had also worked at Thorn's Yacht Yard in Charlestown, MD, and Cramer's Dept. Store in North East, MD. She was a member of North East United Methodist Church, where she was a past member of the Board of Trustees for the Cemetery Committee, and the church choir. She was active with the North East Little League, and Cub Scouts. She enjoyed all sports, especially at North East High School. She was an avid golfer and bowler, and she bowled with the Cecil Lanes National Team in Elkton, MD. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, George S. Cantler, Sr., of North East, MD; son, George S. Cantler, Jr. and his wife Bobbie, of Perryville, MD; siblings, Ruth Simpson, North East, MD, Genevieve Patchell, Charlestown, MD, Allen Purner, Elkton, MD, Marshall Lloyd Purner, North East, MD, Delores Coulter, Rising Sun, MD; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cantler was preceded in death by her brother, Clinton J. Purner who passed away on August 27, 2004; and great-grandson, Zachary Boone. The viewing will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2005 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, MD. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 11:00 AM at North East United Methodist Church, 308 South Main Street, North East, MD. Rev. Daniel Gedman will officiate. Interment will follow services in North East Methodist Cemetery, North East, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Chesapeake Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 2332, Elkton, MD 21922-2332.
