Edwin Alexander Smith

Edwin Alexander Smith, 99 of Rising Sun, MD, formerly of Bay View, MD, entered eternal rest at his home Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

Born in the family home near Bay View, MD on August 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Lyman Jones Smith and Minnie (Carhart) Smith and husband of the late WillaMetta (Phillippe) Smith who passed away in 2013.

Edwin took over his father’s farm, continuing the family tradition. Paul Harvey, an American radio broadcaster for ABC News Radio, could have been describing Edwin when he said “…God looked down on his planned paradise and said, ‘I need a caretaker’ So God made a Farmer. God said, ‘I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper…So God made a Farmer.’”

Edwin was a lifetime member of Shelemiah United Methodist Church in Bay View, MD serving God and his community in various capacities through the years.

Edwin is survived by his children: Dwight A. Smith (Jackie) of Elkton, MD, Betty Jane Smith Adams (Dennis) of Rising Sun, MD, Donald K. Smith (Debra) of Winter Haven, FL, Douglas E. Smith (Karen) of Annville, PA, Leonard O. Smith (Frances) of Rochelle, GA and Linda L. Smith Glixon (Roy) of Ashton, MD; 17 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren, one great grandson deceased and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Douglas Smith will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 11:00am at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A. 127 South Main Street, North East, MD with visitation beginning at 10:00am.

Interment will follow services in Shelemiah United Methodist Cemetery, Bay View, MD.
