Edward John “Ted” Sweeney, 63, passed away on February 4, 2026. Born on June 14, 1962, in Montclair, New Jersey, Ted was known for his goofy spirit, loving heart, and endless supply of fun facts—often shared with a Diet Coke in hand.
Ted graduated from Chatham High School in Chatham, NJ, in 1980 and went on to earn his degree from Susquehanna University in 1984.
Ted shared 33 loving years of marriage with his wife, Lynn, with whom he built a wonderful life. He was a proud and deeply loving father to his two sons, Teddy and Matt, who meant everything to him. Whether cheering them on at sporting events, playing video games, or simply spending time together, he treasured being their dad.
He loved hockey and not only played the game with his boys but also coached, sharing his passion and encouragement with young players. Ted also enjoyed boating, spending time with friends at the North East River Yacht Club, and going on bike rides with Lynn along the C&D Canal.
He is survived by his beloved wife Lynn; his sons Teddy and Matt; his daughter-in-law Meghan; his sisters Suzanne and Karen; his brother-in-law Skip; and many extended family members and friends who will miss his playful sense of humor and lighthearted nature. He was predeceased by his father, Edward Brice Sweeney, and his mother, Marie Roche Sweeney.
No services will be held at this time. A celebration of Ted’s life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hockey in NJ or North East River Youth Sailing Foundation in Ted’s honor.
