Edgar A. “Mick” McMullen, Sr., 91 of Charlestown, MD, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in the Abbey Manor Assisted Living, Elkton, MD.

He was born in Charlestown, MD on October 21, 1923, the son of the late Edgar and Elizabeth (Barnes) McMullen, wonderful parents who gave him a good start in life. He had many good memories of a wonderful childhood mixed with work and play.

Mick graduated from Jacob Tome Institute in Port Deposit in June 1941.  He then attended a government trade school to learn the machinist trade and in September 1941, became an employee of the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground.  He was a machinist all of his working life and retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1980.  One week later, he went to work for Thiokol as a machinist and retired from there in 1986.  He always said he enjoyed his work as a machinist and thanks to the Lord; he became good at his work.

On January 20, 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and was privileged to serve his country as an Aviation Machinist Mate until honorably discharged in April 1946,

He was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church, Charlestown, MD, the Charlestown Fire Company and Union Lodge #48 AF & AM, Port Deposit, MD.  He had the privilege of serving his town as a commissioner and for eight years as President.  Mick said he always considered Charlestown as his town and home; a wonderful town where he made many friends and loved them all.

In July 1947, he married Betty Jane Mitchell.  They were married for 53 years until her passing on July 18, 2000.  She was a good wife and a terrific mother who blessed him with four children: Edgar A. “Mick” McMullen, Jr. of Charlestown, MD, William G. “Bill” McMullen of Elkton, MD, John C. McMullen of Havre de Grace, MD and Thelma E. McMullen of Charlestown, MD.  They in turn blessed him with three wonderful grandchildren: Billie Kay, Patrick and Jacob and 6 great grandchildren.
