Donne Shuman Lewis, 76 of North East, MD, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE.
Born in Sunbury, PA, on February 5, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Donald M. and Faye (Bastress) Shuman. Donne grew up in Northumberland PA and was an active member of St.
Thomas Moore Catholic Church. She was a 1966 graduate of Shikellamy High School playing the saxophone in the high school band and actively participated in the school newspaper and yearbook staff. She obtained her associate’s degree in business at Goldey-Beacom College in 1968 then returned 10 years later to obtain her bachelor’s degree. “Donne always had her nose in a book even at a young age. She was the original spell-checker.”
She retired from Delaware Express where she worked as the office manager for 33 years.
Donne was a lifelong volunteer which included The Big Sister Program, Meeting Ground for Homelessness and a mentally challenged women’s shelter. She was an active member of St. Mary Anne's Parish for almost 50 years, Donne was a past member of the Mission Committee, Worship Committee and the Parish Life Committee, in which she enjoyed planning the parish's annual Valentine's Day Luncheon. Donne managed the St. Mary Anne's Outreach Food Pantry for many years. She ran a team of over 30 volunteers who assisted hundreds of community families and individuals in need of food. Her assistance was invaluable to the Outreach ministry and to the community at large. She also was a past Eucharistic Minister and assisted clergy at the altar. Donne was a vital member of the parish, and her assistance touched many lives. She was awarded in 1993 Maryland’s Most Beautiful Person award for Cecil County (for her volunteerism).
For many years Donne and her husband enjoyed traveling to Florida and Bethany Beach and spending time with friends there.
Survivors include her husband: Edward Olson Lewis, Sr.; stepson: Edward Olson Lewis, Jr.; 2 grandsons: Kade and Mason Lewis; 3 sisters: Denise Ryan (Leo) nieces Kathleen Breuer (Kevin) & Patricia Molloy (Brett), Patricia Shuman, Pamela Heim (David) nephew: Nathan; and brother: Philip Shuman nieces: Cadence & Nova and niece Melissa Shuman Hoy and numerous great nieces and nephews. A special thank you to her nephew Mike & Denise Wright for all their help and assistance.
In addition to her parents, Donne was preceded in death by a brother: Douglas Shuman, brother-in law Charles Hickam, 4 sister-in-laws & their spouses Betty & Jack Wright, June & Bob Payne, Elsie & Fred Gill, Carol & Jack Culver.
Memorial service will be held January 25, 2025, at 11:00 at St. Mary Anne's Episcopal Church, 315 South Main Street, North East, MD, with visitation beginning one hour prior to service.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
