Bertha Delaplaine McKinney Carter, 80 years young, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at her residence in North East, MD, surrounded by her loving family.

Bertie was born in North East, MD on October 10, 1932, the daughter of the late Willard W. and the late Henrietta Jacqueline (Ford) McKinney.

Bertie was a graduate of North East High School and Salisbury State Teachers College.  She worked in Government Research at the VA, Perry Point, MD prior to her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church, North East, MD; the Turkey Point Light House Committee; the North East Water Festival Committee and former Chairwoman of the Boy Scouts of America Troop #131.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, yard work, sitting in her swing on her deck and enjoying the comfort of Luke.

Survivors include her children: Marsha D. Carter, Michel A. Carter and Matheu J. Carter all of North East, MD; a grandson: Chris Mullins; and a great grandson: Zion Mullins.  She is also survived by her sisters: Lois Blansfield, Linda Martino, Michael McKinney-Miller and Lou Cranouski; and a brother: Joseph McKinney; a large number of nieces and nephews; and a remarkable network of friends.

Bertie was preceded in death by 1 grandchild: Michelle Mullins; 2 brothers: Willard McKinney and Mark McKinney; and 2 sisters: Caroline Truet and Jacqueline McKinney.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, where the family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 AM until service time.

Interment will follow services in St. Mary Anne’s Cemetery, North East, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North East Fire Co., in care of the funeral home.
