It is with profound sadness and loving memory that we gather to celebrate the life and ascension to heaven of Janice Margret Flood, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Janice’s life was full of family, chosen family, and friends who loved her beyond words, along with students, and young people whom she served with loving kindness at church. On the Feast of the Ascension, May 29th, 2025, Janice left this world to find peace in the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior.
On the eve of her 62nd birthday, Janice won her battle with cancer. With courage and unshakable faith, she crossed the finish line and stepped into eternal glory, welcomed by the saints who came before her. While we grieve her absence, we find deep peace in knowing she is now in the loving arms of Jesus resting, rejoicing, and fully healed. Her race is done, and her victory is forever.
Janice was born on May 30th, 1963, in Philadelphia, PA to Jane and John Fox of Moorestown, NJ. Janice attended Moorestown High School followed by Cabrini College where she was a double major in History and Political Science. Janice was an aspiring lawyer, not sure if she wanted to have kids. Little did she know that her four children, and later her six grandchildren, would become her entire world. During college, while visiting a friend at St. Joseph’s University, she met her husband, Andy, and the rest is history. After college, Janice and Andy moved to Rochester Hills, MI where they made friendships with a depth that few will ever know. It was here that Janice became a mom, giving birth to their first child, Elisabeth. Michigan was followed by Parkersburg, WV, where Christopher and Peter were born, then Buffalo, NY, before settling in Elkton, MD, where Joseph was born and she resided the remainder of her life.
Janice was an unwavering advocate for youth. She taught 7th grade history, Western Civilization, and middle school Economics for 10 years at the Towle Institute, where she inspired hundreds of students. She was a parishioner at St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church in North East, Maryland for 29 years and a certified lay reader for 25 years. Janice led Sunday School, Youth Group, and Vacation Bible School. As a Sunday School teacher, she incorporated a new curriculum that used active storytelling and play. Additionally, Janice was a Reading Assist tutor, helping to teach children with difficulty learning to read that success is within reach.
Janice became a grandmother in 2012 with the birth of Elisabeth’s daughter Anna. She is now “Grandme” six times over. Janice was always planning crafts and activities and baking with her grandchildren. Grandme’s magic came from careful preparation. There was always a space prepared for each activity with the needed tools and supplies in the sizes needed for different grandchildren. Messes were welcomed with open arms and finished products were always perfect not because of the results but because of the process and love inherent to making them with her beloved grandchildren. From sleepovers at Grandme’s with cinnamon scones baked together for breakfast, to pistachio bread, to Christmas cookies and gingerbread houses, to a holiday craft at every single holiday, Grandme was always creating intentional, meaningful quality time with her grandchildren.
Janice had an indomitable will and was always true to herself. In 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite chemotherapy and radiation, despite hair loss and lack of appetite, she was always there for her family. After being cancer free for 8 years, in 2023 the unthinkable happened. While visiting their son Peter and friends in Michigan, it was discovered that Janice had a brain tumor. Soon thereafter, Janice was diagnosed with glioblastoma. She proceeded to fight with every ounce of her being to spend 22 more months with her family. In this premature twilight, there was laughter and there were tears, there was tremendous joy and new life with the birth of another grandchild, and there was the deepest sorrow as the inevitable drew near. During her battle with glioblastoma, Janice was asked if she believed in miracles. Her answer was yes, but not for herself. Janice asserted that she had seen miracles in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Janice fought until the very end. With her body giving out and speech fading, she never failed to say, “I love you”.
Janice is survived by her loving husband Andrew T. Flood, and their children, Elisabeth J. Lester (Phillip) of Elkton, MD, Christopher M. Flood (Kayla) of Silver Spring, MD, Peter J. Flood (Melanie) of Silver Spring, MD, and Joseph B. Flood of Elkton, MD. Janice’s legacy is the love she bore for her family and is carried forward by her grandchildren: Anna, Aletheia, Abigail, Mason, Micah, and Delta. Janice was preceded in death by her parents John Mather Fox and Jane Helen (Miller) Fox.
Friends and family will gather in remembrance of Janice to celebrate her life and that she is now at peace. A memorial service will take place at St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church, 315 South Main Street, North East, MD, on Friday June 6, 2025 at 10:00 AM. Fellowship with the family can occur during a visitation beginning at 9:00 AM and again during a reception in the church parish center following the service. We invite all whose lives were touched by Jancie to come together, share stories, and celebrate a life well-lived.
Janice asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Mary Anne’s Church, note in the memo line The Scholarship Fund. This fund provides support to a graduating high school senior by helping with their college tuition. Supporting and encouraging the next generation was one of Janice’s greatest passions. This fund carries that legacy forward.
May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon Janice.
