John Whitfield Lewis, Sr., 78 of Charlestown, MD, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in Union Hospital, Elkton, MD.

A lifelong resident of Charlestown, he was born on September 26, 1934, the son of the late James L. and the late Ogretta (McCrary) Lewis.  

He served in the MD National Guard attaining the rank of Staff Sgt.

John retired from Perry Point VA Medical Center – Public Health; he worked at WalMart in North East, MD and owned and operated C.J.’s Market in Charlestown, MD.

He was a member of Charlestown Volunteer Fire Dept. and St. John’s UM Church.  He enjoyed gardening, yard work and just loved to “piddle”.


Survivors include his loving wife: Charlotte Lewis; a son: Steven L. Lewis of Charlestown, MD; a daughter: Julie A. Lewis of Key Largo, FL and his son who passed in 2007: John W. Lewis, Jr.; his stepchildren: Leroy K. Hurley, Jr. of Washington, NC, Leslie J. Bailey of Stanfield, NC and Norma Dowling of Littlestown, PA; his siblings: Sue Moyer of Lewes, DE and Libby Lewis of North East, MD; 14 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by 4 siblings: Clarence C. Lewis, James L. Lewis, Modenna Johnson and Bill Lewis.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, with a viewing beginning at 1:00 PM until service time.

Private interment will be in Charlestown Cemetery.
