I am deeply saddened to learn of Joan's passing. Although my time spent with her was brief, I admired her energy, sense of humor and positive attitude. Karen always spoke of her deep love and respect for her parents and was proud of all that you accomplished. Joan will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Dear Dick,

My sincere condolences. I can’t imagine what you’re going through after such a long vibrant relationship. Just last week, I was reliving with Jim my February 2016 visit to you and Joan at your lovely home in Boynton Beach. I only met Joan once. However, she welcomed me with generous, warm, open arms - like a long lost cousin. That’s how I’ll always remember her. I thank God for blessing my brother Ray and his dearly departed wife Kathy with the two of you. You both have been such good friends to them for so many years.
You’re in my prayers.

Dear Grammy,

I don't know if writing this is the form of a letter to you is the way it's meant to be done, but I don't care. I consider myself to be a very lucky young woman as I was blessed enough to be able to call you my grandmother. You're one of the strongest women I know and I have looked up to you my entire life.

When I was little, we were buddies. I remember doing everything from going grocery shopping with you to just sitting and watching TV in your house. These were my favourite things when I was little. I just liked being with you. You gave me my first "job" as your 'secretary' (although I realise now that you actually employed someone for that).

You were maybe one of the most beautiful souls this world has ever seen. Never mean, but able to stand up for yourself in a way that I only hope I can be able to do one day. Your empathy and love for those around you only make up part of the beautiful heart that you have. The world may have lost one of its greatest treasure this week; however, the universe is lucky enough to have gained one of its most precious angels.

I am so thankful for all of the years I got to spend with you. You have been just as big an influence on my life as my parents and I will be forever grateful for everything that you have done for and taught to me. If I turn out to be half the woman that you were, I will be able to say that I have lived a fulfilling life.

You will always be my hero, Grammy. I love you more than I'll ever be able to describe and I will miss you so so so much.

Love always,
Em

Message from Rick O'Leary

Dear Dick and Karen and family,

As you know I love each of you and am so very sorry to receive the news of Joan's passing. I feel blessed to have had dinner with you and Joan this past week and only wish I had stayed longer.

I will long remember Jim Baxter's teasing you both about St Joan. You have a rare and enduring love that has integrity and light. It was said in Fiddler on the Roof that love is the breath we take with each other, the sacrifices and the joys and not just the words I love you.

The testimony of Joan is kindness in word and deed, a elegant simplicity and a fierce intellect. I never felt anything but included, welcomed and encouraged to be my best and value the lifetime of friendship that has endured 40 plus years.

Joan, I will miss you and a star is missing in the sky but you burnt so very brightly while you were with us.

God bless and keep you as you endure this lonely night. Know you are in my prayers,

In sympathy,

Rick O'Leary
