Cecil Community College

Cecil College is a community college in North East, Maryland, named for its location in Cecil County. Cecil Community College was founded in 1968 to meet the educational needs of Cecil County residents. On June 13, 2007, the Maryland Higher Education Commission voted to accept its petition to change its name to Cecil College.

Social Security Some of the deceased's family members may be able to receive Social Security benefits if the deceased person worked long enough under Social Security to quality for benefits. You should get in touch with Social Security as soon as you can to make sure the family receives all of the benefits to which it may be entitled. Please read the following information carefully to learn what benefits may be available. A one-time payment of $255 can be paid to the surviving spouse if he or she was living with the deceased; or, if living apart, was receiving certain Social Security benefits on the deceased's record. If there is no surviving spouse, the payment is made to a child who is eligible for benefits on the deceased's record in the month of death. Certain family members may be eligible to receive monthly benefits, including: 

  • A widow or widower age 60 or older (age 50 or older if disabled); 
  • A surviving spouse at any age who is caring for the deceased's child under age 16 or disabled; 
  • An unmarried child of the deceased who is younger than age 18 (or age 18 or 19 if he or she is a full-time student in an elementary or secondary school); or age 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22; 
  • Parents, age 62 or older, who were dependent on the deceased for at least half of their support; and 
  • A surviving divorced spouse, under certain circumstances. The Social Security website is a valuable resource for information about all of Social Security's programs. 

There are a number of things you can do online. In addition to using the Social Security website, you can call them toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. Staff can answer specific questions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. They can also provide information by automated phone service 24 hours a day. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may call the TTY number at 1-800-325-0778.

Local Interest

Elk Neck Forest 

Elk Neck State Forest is 3,571 acres situated in central Cecil County consisting of four separate tracts of land. Elk Neck State Forest is open to the public for hunting, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Shooting ranges for bow, hand gun, shotgun and rifle are also available to the public. Permits are accessed from a self-service honor system located at the Maintenance Complex. The forest supports a diverse habitat with mixed deciduous and evergreen trees and an understory of mountain laurel, azaleas and other native shrubs. Birdwatchers, including members of the Cecil County Bird Club, enjoy observing the forest's abundance of migratory birds.


Elk Neck State Park

Elk Neck State Park is located in Cecil County on a peninsula, formed by the Chesapeake Bay on the west and the Elk River on the east. The park boasts over 2,188 acres of varied landscapes including marshlands, heavily wooded areas, white clay cliffs, and beaches. Elk Neck opened to the public in the early 1940s with the purpose of providing recreation in the form of camping, swimming, fishing, boating, and hiking, all of which are still popular today.


Fair Hill NRMA

Fair Hill is a 5,656 acre Natural Resources Management Area, where multiple management practices are employed for the maximum use and protection of Maryland's natural resources. Bordered by Pennsylvania to the north and less than one half mile west of Delaware, Fair Hill is known for its pristine fields, woodlands and natural beauty. 


Milburn Stone Theater

Theater, music, dance and art are proudly brought to Cecil County by the Milburn Stone Theatre. The Milburn Stone is the leading performing arts theater serving the northeast region of Maryland, conveniently located off exit 100B of I-95. A comprehensive organization, the Milburn Stone is accountable for a variety of missions within the theater facility including college, community, and public activities. The Milburn Stone staff is responsible for assisting the College in presenting activities that require use of the theater and affords community organizations the opportunity to present their offerings in a quality rental facility. The theatre is named after the late actor, Milburn Stone, who starred as "Doc Adams" in the long running TV Western Gun Smoke. His wife and daughter have been long time benefactors of the theatre.

Turkey Point Lighthouse

One Hundred and seventy eight years ago a small piece of ground was purchased to build a light station along the banks of the Chesapeake Bay. The original light tower and oil house that were once part of the Turkey Point Light Station remain prominent landmarks for area boaters, hikers and tourist. Turkey Point Lighthouse is located on four acres of ground easily accessed by land in the Elk Neck State Park , Cecil County, Maryland. The light tower is situated on a 100-foot bluff that overlooks the Elk and North East rivers in the upper Chesapeake Bay. 


Upper Bay Museum

The Upper Bay Museum, located at the foot of Walnut Street in North East, MD, houses a large collection of water related articles portraying the Heritage of the Upper Bay Area.The museum houses displays of hunting, boating and fishing artifacts native to the Upper Chesapeake Bay. Visitors can trace the history of the waterfowl hunter through exhibits of outlawed gunning rigs and skilfully carved decoys. They can also follow the progress of Bay boating and fishing with many displays of model boats, nets and one of the country’s best collections of marine engines. From the serious market waterfowl hunter to the hardy commercial fisherman, waterman of every description have shaped the culture of this region.
